A designer fireplace is the focal point of the room<\/h2><\/div><\/div>

Not centering the chimney: a common mistake<\/h3><\/div><\/div>

A badly positioned fireplace, such as one in a corner or at the end of a wall, complicates the whole layout of the room. As an interior designer, I always consider the fireplace to be the focal point of the space, the one that visually \u201canchors\u201d the room.<\/p>

On a recent project, a customer had a fireplace in the corner of the living room. The result? The furniture was difficult to position, and the expensive fireplace had no visual impact. So we refocused the fireplace, and everything changed: the space became coherent, warm and much more welcoming.<\/p>

\ud83d\udc49\u00a0My advice: place your fireplace in the center of a main wall and build your furniture around it to create a balanced, elegant composition.<\/em><\/p><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>

Colorful, flashy fireplaces: a big no-no<\/h3><\/div><\/div>

I call them \u201cfunky fireplaces\u201d: those with bright colors or a bold mix of materials and hues. While boldness is often welcome in decorating, for a fireplace I always recommend keeping to sober tones and noble materials.<\/p>

Materials such as plaster, cement or stone lend an elegant, timeless sobriety. To add character, play with curves and textures rather than garish colors. A designer fireplace is above all a question of balance and visual softness.<\/p>

\ud83d\udc49\u00a0My tip: opt for natural materials and mineral hues for a fireplace that will stand the test of time without going out of style.<\/em><\/p><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>

Ochre or blackened brick fireplaces: a modern touch!<\/h3><\/div><\/div>

Red or blackened brick mantels have a vintage feel that can be charming… but often visually dominate the room and darken the space. In a renovation, I almost always recommend painting them white or a soft hue to bring in light and create visual calm.<\/p>

One of my customers was reluctant to repaint her ochre brick fireplace, inherited from her grandparents. Once whitewashed, it became a focal point of her living room, while respecting the family history.\u00a0Beautiful!<\/em><\/p>
