How to choose the right carpet: My interior design advice
Carpets are often overlooked when it comes to decorating, even though they can totally transform a room. Poorly chosen, it can give the impression of a cramped or untidy space. Well chosen, it becomes a key element in your decor, bringing warmth, style and balance. In this article, I share with you the most common mistakes to avoid and my tips for choosing the right rug for your needs, tastes and interior.

Choosing a carpet: mistakes to avoid and my tips

Carpet size: the bigger, the better

A rug that's too small is the mistake I most often make with my customers. Not only does it make the room seem smaller, but it also throws off the balance of the surrounding furniture.

👉 My advice:

  • In the living room : The front legs of your sofa should rest on the carpet. Ideally, at least 20-30 cm of carpet should protrude from each side of the sofa. This creates a sense of grandeur and unity.
  • In the bedroom : The carpet should extend 50 cm beyond each side of the bed to frame the room harmoniously.

A good-sized rug visually anchors your furniture and gives structure to the space. So don't skimp on size!

Materials: choose to last

The material of your carpet plays a crucial role, as much for its aesthetics as for its durability and maintenance.

👉 The right choices :

  • Wool: It's the choice par excellence. It's durable, easy to maintain, and its texture brings incomparable softness. An investment worth every penny.
  • Cotton and polyester: These are interesting alternatives for high-traffic areas such as the entrance or kitchen, as they are washable.

👉 Absolutely avoid :

  • Viscose : It may look luxurious at first glance, but it's incredibly fragile. A simple water stain can ruin it. If you have children or pets, steer clear.

👉 My advice: Ask yourself in which room you're going to place the rug. For a living room or bedroom, opt for wool. For an entrance hall or kitchen, choose a cotton or polyester rug, which is easier to clean.

Patterns: keep it subtle

A carpet with too busy or too colorful a pattern can quickly become a disruptive element in a room. It can even make it difficult to harmonize with the rest of the decor.

👉 My advice:

  • Opt for subtle patterns and neutral colors, such as natural or mineral hues.
  • If you like patterns, choose simple geometric designs that add character without visually overloading the space.

A sober, timeless rug lets you change your furniture or accessories without fear of creating an imbalance. I invite you to read our article on choosing colors, which can also help you with your interior decoration.

Price: a smart investment

Quality carpets are an investment, but well worth it. Choosing a cheap rug often means choosing one that will have to be replaced quickly. Over time, this is much more expensive than investing in a durable piece from the outset.

👉 My advice:

  • Make your carpet a key element of your decorating budget. A good carpet can last for decades if you choose wisely.
  • Think about maintenance: a quality wool carpet, for example, resists wear better and keeps its shine longer.

Why choose the right carpet to transform your home?

A well-chosen rug is much more than just an accessory. It can :

  • Structure a room by creating defined zones.
  • Bring a feeling of comfort and warmth.
  • Complete your decor and enhance your furniture.

That's why I always take the time to advise my customers on their choice of carpet, according to their needs, tastes and lifestyle.
